What it is Semax and Selank are two synthetic seven-amino-acid peptides with different research backgrounds. Semax was developed from a fragment of ACTH, while Selank is based on the naturally occurring peptide tuftsin. Both also contain the short Pro-Gly-Pro (PGP) sequence. The two peptides have been studied for different aspects of brain function. Semax research has focused largely on learning, memory, neuronal plasticity and neurotrophic signalling. Selank has been studied more in relation to stress, anxiety-related behaviour and signalling involving the GABA system. How they differ and why study them together One area of interest with Semax is BDNF, a protein involved in neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity. In animal studies, Semax has produced changes in BDNF levels and in the expression of genes involved in neurotrophic signalling. This is one reason the peptide appears in research on learning, memory and the brain's response to injury. Selank follows a different path.
