Product information
What it is SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide that targets mitochondria, particularly the inner mitochondrial membrane. It has an affinity for cardiolipin, a phospholipid found there in high concentrations. Cardiolipin helps maintain membrane structure and is closely connected with the electron transport chain and ATP production. This unusual membrane interaction has made the peptide interesting in research on mitochondrial function, energy production and oxidative stress. How it works and what the research shows Much of the research starts with cardiolipin. When elamipretide binds to it, changes have been observed in the organisation and function of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Studies have also reported changes in electron transport through the mitochondrial respiratory chain and in reactive oxygen species production. The antioxidant part is less straightforward than it once seemed. Early work often focused on direct ROS reduction. Newer research suggests that some of these changes may instead follow improvements in mitochondrial function and the way cardiolipin-dependent proteins are organised. Other work has looked at mitochondrial permeability transition, SIRT1 and inflammatory signalling involving NF-κB and TNF-alpha. Most findings in these areas come from experimental models. Human studies have gone further in some directions, including research into m
