Product information

What it is SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide developed to target the inner mitochondrial membrane. This membrane houses the electron transport chain, the machinery cells use to produce most of their ATP. SS-31 is unusual because it has a strong affinity for cardiolipin, a phospholipid concentrated in this part of the mitochondria. This gives researchers a fairly specific target. Instead of looking at antioxidant activity across the cell, much of the work on SS-31 has focused on what happens directly at the mitochondrial membrane. How it works and what the research shows SS-31 binds to cardiolipin, which is involved in the structure of the inner mitochondrial membrane and the function of the electron transport chain. Studies suggest this interaction can affect membrane stability and mitochondrial energy production. Lower levels of reactive oxygen species have been observed as well. Earlier research often described SS-31 mainly as an antioxidant, but the picture now appears to be more complicated. Changes in ROS may be linked to its effects on mitochondrial function rather than simple direct scavenging. Other experimental work has looked at mitochondrial permeability transition and signalling involving SIRT1, NF-κB and TNF-alpha. These findings come largely from preclinical mo
