What it is Selank is a synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide based on tuftsin, a naturally occurring peptide associated with immune function. First developed in Russia, Selank later became the subject of research into several aspects of nervous system signalling, including the GABA system. The peptide contains seven amino acids. Its relationship to tuftsin has also led to research beyond the nervous system, including experimental work on immune signalling and gene expression. How it works and what the research shows There isn't one established mechanism that explains all of Selank's observed activity. Much of the early work focused on GABA. Experiments in rats found changes in the activity of genes linked to GABA signalling in the frontal cortex. A different line of research found that Selank can interact with enzymes responsible for breaking down enkephalins, peptides that occur naturally in the nervous system. There is some human research, although not nearly as much. Small studies conducted in Russia tested Selank in people with anxiety disorders, in some cases alongside established anti-anxiety drugs.
