What it is Thymosin Alpha 1 (Tα1) is a 28-amino acid peptide first isolated from thymic tissue. It is also produced naturally as a fragment of the larger protein prothymosin alpha. Its synthetic form is known as thymalfasin. Much of the early interest in Tα1 came from its connection with the thymus and T-cell development. The thymusbecomes less active with age, and the production of new T cells falls with it. This made Tα1 a natural candidate for research into thymic function, immune regulation and the changes that occur as the immune system ages. There is clinical research too. Pharmaceutical thymalfasin has been studied in infectious diseases, cancer and several settings where immune function is impaired. Results vary by condition, and these pharmaceutical preparations are separate from research-only Tα1 products. How it works and what the research shows There is no single pathway that explains the research around Tα1. T cells are a major part of it, but studies have also looked at dendritic cells, natural killer (NK) cells and the signals connecting innate and adaptive immunity.
