Product information

What it is MOTS-C is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than nuclear DNA. Its mitochondrial origin is unusual and has drawn interest to the peptide as part of the signalling that takes place between mitochondria and the rest of the cell. That signalling can reach the nucleus. Under metabolic stress, MOTS-C has been observed moving there and affecting nuclear gene expression. AMPK appears to be involved in this response. As a cellular energy sensor, it responds to shifts in energy availability and has become an important part of research into how MOTS-C behaves when cells are under metabolic stress. How it works and what the research shows Metabolic regulation has been a major focus of MOTS-C research. Studies in cells and animals have explored glucose handling, insulin sensitivity and the response to metabolic stress. More recent work has taken a closer look at mitochondrial function itself. In 2026, a University of Copenhagen study found improved mitochondrial bioenergetic performance in skeletal muscle following MOTS-C administration. Experiments using two transgenic mouse strains indicated that these changes depended on both PGC-1α and AMPK. The same paper also included a human exercise study examining circulating levels of the peptide, although the mechanistic findings came from mouse models. Research published in 2025 examined other tissues. In a r
