Product information

What it is MOTS-C is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA. That is an unusual origin for a signalling peptide and one of the reasons it has attracted attention in mitochondrial research. It also helped expand the view of mitochondria beyond energy production, showing another way these organelles can communicate with the rest of the cell. One particularly interesting finding came from experiments involving metabolic stress. The peptide was found to move into the nucleus, where changes in nuclear gene expression were observed. This response was linked to AMPK signalling and included genes involved in cellular stress and metabolism. How it works and what the research shows Much of the evidence is still preclinical, but recent studies have added more detail. In 2026, researchers at the University of Copenhagen reported that MOTS-C improved mitochondrial bioenergetic performance in skeletal muscle through mechanisms dependent on both PGC-1α and AMPK. The mechanistic part of this work used transgenic mouse models, while a human exercise experiment included in the same study examined circulating MOTS-C. Other recent research has looked beyond skeletal muscle. A 2025 study in a rat model of type 2 diabetes found changes in cardiac mitochondrial respiration after treatment, along with improved glucose handling and reduced cardiac hypertrophy. Another 2025 s
