What it is Semax is a synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide based on a short fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), but without its hormonal activity. Its sequence combines ACTH(4-7) with the tripeptide Pro-Gly-Pro. Developed in Russia, Semax has been studied for several decades, including clinical research in people recovering from ischemic stroke. Much of the work on how the peptide acts, however, comes from animal and laboratory studies. How it works and what the research shows Neurotrophin signalling is one of the better studied areas. Experiments in rats found changes in BDNF and NGF gene expression after Semax administration. These changes appeared in the hippocampus and frontal cortex, but their timing and direction differed between brain regions.
